I-10 Shutdown: Florida's Winter of Discontent

Hey everyone, so, you know how Florida winters are supposed to be all sunshine and margaritas? Yeah, well, 2024 decided to throw a wrench – a GIANT wrench – into that perfectly planned beach vacation. I'm talking about the I-10 shutdown. It was, to put it mildly, a total disaster.

I was planning this amazing road trip down to the Keys with my family. We'd booked our AirBnB in Key West, bought matching "Shell We Dance" t-shirts (don't judge!), and I'd even painstakingly planned out our playlist – a mix of Jimmy Buffett and some classic rock. Then BAM! The I-10 closure hit.

We were supposed to hit the road on a Friday, and the announcement came on Wednesday. Panic mode, major panic mode. I spent hours, hours, trying to re-route. My trusty GPS app became my worst enemy – spitting out options that added an extra eight hours to the drive. Eight! My kids were already bouncing off the walls with excitement, and now they were about to lose their minds from boredom.

Lesson learned: Always have backup plans, folks. And I mean real backup plans, not just hoping for the best. Have alternate routes mapped out. Download offline maps. You know, adulting 101 stuff that I clearly failed.

So, the original route was toast. But, because of the I-10 closure, we ended up taking a scenic detour through the Everglades. It was, admittedly, beautiful. We saw alligators, herons – even a rare manatee sighting! We stopped at cute roadside stands, ate some truly amazing key lime pie, and even did a little airboat tour.

Unexpected bonus: Sometimes, life throws you a curveball, and you just gotta roll with it. That unplanned adventure through the Everglades turned into one of our favorite parts of the trip. So, there’s that.

If you're planning a Florida trip this winter – or anytime, really – here's my advice, based on my hard-won experience:

• Check for road closures: This seems obvious, but you'd be surprised. Seriously, check the Florida Department of Transportation website (and other credible sources) regularly for updates.
• Download offline maps: Cell service can be spotty, especially in rural areas. Don't get stranded because your GPS needs an internet connection.
• Have backup plans: Always, always, always have an alternate route. Spend some time looking at different options before you hit the road.
• Pack snacks and water: Traffic jams, especially those caused by unexpected closures, can get ugly. Be prepared.
• Stay informed: Follow local news and transportation updates.

The I-10 shutdown was a nightmare, a true test of my patience (and my marriage!). But hey, it taught me a valuable lesson about flexibility and the importance of planning. Hopefully, my hard-earned wisdom will save you some stress. And hey, at least we got some awesome Everglades pics out of it, right?
