Leo Woodall's Apple Thriller: A Review That's Anything But Sweet

Hey everyone! So, I finally finished reading Leo Woodall's "Apple Thriller," and wow, what a ride. I’m still kinda reeling, honestly. This wasn't your typical cozy mystery; this book had teeth. And I mean that in the best way possible. Let's dive in, shall we? This is going to be a long one, so grab your favorite beverage!

A Twisting Plot That Kept Me Guessing (Mostly)

The premise alone had me hooked – a seemingly idyllic apple farm, a family with secrets, and a murder. Classic stuff, right? But Woodall takes those familiar elements and throws them into a blender. The result? A deliciously suspenseful cocktail of twists and turns. I honestly thought I had it all figured out halfway through, like, aha, I got this! But then BAM! The rug got pulled out from under me. Twice.

One thing I really appreciated was how Woodall built suspense. It wasn't just jump scares or over-the-top violence. It was more like a slow burn; he gradually revealed information, dropping breadcrumbs along the way. This kept me hooked, wanting to know more, desperate to finish the book. I literally stayed up way too late because I couldn’t put it down.

I even made notes in the margins – which is a big deal for me, because I almost never do that. Usually, I’m just happy to finally finish a book. But this? This demanded my attention. I loved how he used descriptions of the farm and the orchard – almost like a character in itself – really setting the atmosphere.

Characters You'll Love (and Hate)

The characters were compelling, even the ones I wanted to throttle. Each one had their own quirks and secrets which is really important when you are building a complex mystery. You really get a feel for their motivations, even if they're, um, questionable. Some of them you genuinely root for. Others… well, let's just say I wouldn't want to share a cider with them.

Seriously, the main detective character, I can't remember his name right now, was complex and flawed. It made him feel realistic. He wasn’t some super-powered crime-solving machine. That’s what really makes the story believable. He had his own struggles, his own doubts. And that, to me, was refreshing. So many books these days have these ridiculously perfect heroes and heroines; I'm just so tired of the tropes.

A Few (Minor) Complaints

Okay, so it wasn't perfect. There were a couple of plot points that felt a little rushed, and I would've loved a bit more background on some of the secondary characters. But these were small things, really. Honestly, they didn't detract too much from the overall reading experience, but I’m just being super honest here, so there you have it.

One thing I wanted to see more of was the suspense aspect of it all; the overall pacing was fantastic, but I would have preferred more tension throughout. Although, maybe I’m just asking for too much, I don't know!

The Verdict? A Must-Read!

Despite a couple of minor quibbles, "Apple Thriller" is a fantastic read. It's suspenseful, well-written, and features compelling characters. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and I found myself completely invested in the story. I highly recommend it to fans of crime fiction, thrillers, and anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Seriously, you won't regret it. Five out of five stars from me!
