My Brush with Fire (and Smoke)

Okay, so panic mode is NOT helpful. Instead, think preparedness.

• Develop an Evacuation Plan: Know your escape routes, your designated meeting spot, and have a go-bag packed with essentials (water, food, meds, important documents). I even keep a list of emergency contacts on my fridge; this helped when I was panicked.
• Create Defensible Space: Clearing brush and flammable materials around your home is KEY. This gives firefighters a better chance to protect your property. This is super important.
• Stay Informed: Sign up for emergency alerts. I use both the county and city alerts, they send out the notifications straight to my phone. That really saved me from another panic attack.

I’ve even made it a habit to check the San Diego County fire weather warning every morning during fire season. It’s become like checking the weather forecast, but way more intense.
